AVELOR SUMMARY
The red carotenoid from tomatoes. In laboratory testing it was the most efficient singlet oxygen quencher of the carotenoids assayed, though the same authors note that antioxidants present at higher tissue concentrations may contribute comparably in living tissue (Di Mascio 1990, PMID: 2088803). Higher dietary intake and higher blood levels of lycopene are associated with modestly lower prostate cancer risk in observational meta-analyses, on the order of 14 to 19 percent, and the pooled trend is not significant in every synthesis. Randomised trials of lycopene supplements have not reproduced that association on prostate-specific antigen. In a human feeding study, tomato paste delivered roughly 3.8-fold the lycopene absorption of an equal dose from fresh tomatoes, and absorption is higher when lycopene is taken with fat.
