Psyllium Husk
MODERATE EVIDENCESupplementLast updated
AVELOR SUMMARY
Cross-ref. Plantago ovata seed husk, a viscous, gel-forming, largely non-fermented soluble fiber. In pooled randomized trials, a median dose of about 10 g/day is associated with LDL cholesterol lower by about 0.33 mmol/L. Psyllium taken before meals is associated with improved glycemic measures in proportion to baseline loss of glycemic control, with no significant glucose lowering seen in euglycemic subjects. For bowel regularity, doses above 10 g/day sustained 4 weeks or longer show the clearest effect in trials.
