Exercise and body weight: Evidence-Based Supplement Guide
What works, what does not, and what is dangerous.

Overview
Exercise alone usually changes body weight only modestly. A review found that aerobic programmes at public health levels give at most modest weight loss, around 2 kilograms,
and that results vary widely between people (PMID 24438736). It concluded that large weight loss from aerobic exercise is unlikely unless the volume is very high
(PMID 24438736).
Exercise still matters for weight. The same review gives exercise an important role in weight maintenance after weight loss,
and notes that activity brings health benefits even when weight does not change (PMID 24438736).
The type of exercise changes what you lose and gain. In a trial of 119 sedentary, overweight adults over eight months,
aerobic training reduced body mass and fat mass more than resistance training (PMID 23019316). Resistance training increased lean mass more than aerobic training,
and combining both took twice the time without more fat loss than aerobic training alone (PMID 23019316).
Steps
1. **Expect modest weight change from exercise alone.** Aerobic programmes at public health levels gave modest loss, and results varied widely (PMID 24438736).
2. **Favour aerobic training if fat loss is your main aim.** It reduced fat mass more than resistance training in the trial (PMID 23019316).
3. **Keep resistance training for lean mass.** It increased lean mass more than aerobic training (PMID 23019316).
4. **Keep exercising after weight loss.** The review gives exercise an important role in weight maintenance (PMID 24438736).
5. **Judge exercise by more than the scale.** Activity brought health benefits even without weight loss (PMID 24438736).
Duration
The training trial ran for eight months (PMID 23019316). The review covers both initial weight loss and the maintenance period that follows (PMID 24438736).
Limitations
- **The trial studied 119 sedentary, overweight adults**, so results may differ in people who already train (PMID 23019316).
- **The review summarises other studies** rather than reporting a new trial (PMID 24438736).
- **Weight change varied widely between individuals** (PMID 24438736).
- **This guide has not been reviewed by a clinician.** `reviewStatus` above says so.
Cautions
- **If you have a long-term health condition or take regular medicines, plan changes in exercise or weight with a clinician.**
- **Weight is not the only measure of progress.** Activity brought health benefits without weight loss (PMID 24438736).
